“They are so appreciative. I hear ‘thank you, thank you, thank you so much,’ all the time,” said volunteer Kaye Cunningham.

This is the first Thanksgiving she and her daughter, Caroline, spent lending a helping hand at the mission.

“Family is everything,” said Cunningham. “Somebody is appreciative of what I do and I’m appreciative that they’re letting me do something for them.”

For Don Waite, known by his fellow volunteers as the “Green Bean Man”, it’s his 26th Thanksgiving helping out.

“It’s nice to be able to contribute to people that just aren’t as fortunate as I am,” he said. “I’ve been blessed tremendously in my life and it’s a great opportunity to give back.”

Between a breakfast for the homeless, packing and delivering meals to low-income senior citizens and others in need, and a dinner at the rescue mission, the volunteers helped to feed more than 1,000 people in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.

“For us, it’s just about serving those in need every single day,” said the mission’s Development Director Doug Smith. “We like to say hope starts with a meal. So, when someone comes in, we believe that’s our opportunity to help them, whether it’s on Thanksgiving or any other day of the year.”

Light of Life is always looking for volunteers.
