Police investigating the discovery of a human foot on a path believe it belonged to a woman aged over 16.

Officers recovered a “foot and small section of lower leg”, close to an old railway track at Louth Road in New Waltham, north-east Lincolnshire, last month.

On Friday, Humberside Police said that forensic examination has led to the conclusion that the foot is that of a woman aged over 16 and around 5ft 2in tall.

A spokesman said pathologists have indicated that the foot, which was found at about 6.45am on April 25, is likely to have been “deliberately dismembered” at some stage in the last year.

The foot was found by dog walkers.

The grim discovery has raised fears that the remains of the woman could be nearby.

Detective Chief Inspector Al Curtis said: “Forensic specialists are continuing to assist us with further examination of the foot and small section of lower leg to help establish the circumstances of how it came to be found in the area.

“Pathologists have also indicated that the foot is likely to have been deliberately dismembered and that they believe this has happened at some point during the last 12 months.

“Our main focus is to establish who the woman is and how her foot came to be found here.

“We’re examining local, regional and national reports of missing people and while our initial physical searches of the area are now complete, we cannot rule out the possibility of further searches being carried out as new evidence and lines of inquiry emerge.”

People with information that can assist the investigation are asked to call 101, quoting log 85 of April 25, or to contact Crimestoppers.
