EXCLUSIVE: Six and a half years after The Mindy Project ended its Hulu run, Mindy Kaling is back at the streamer with a new single-camera comedy, Murray Hill. The project, from Warner Bros. TV, where Kaling is under an overall deal, was taken out at the beginning of the year. In a tough marketplace, the project garnered interest from multiple buyers, landing at Hulu in a competitive situation with a script-to-series commitment.

Written by Kaling, the comedy revolves around five work-obsessed twenty-somethings who strive for professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness in Manhattan’s most glamorous neighborhood, Murray Hill.

Kaling executive produces via her Kaling International and its overall deal at WBTV alongside 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein. Kaling International’s Jessica Kumai Scott co-executive produces.

Murray Hill reunites Kaling and Hulu which stepped up in 2015 to pick up Kaling’s first series as a creator, The Mindy Project, when it was canceled by Fox after three seasons. The workplace/romantic comedy, whose repeats had already been doing well on Hulu following the streamer’s 2014 acquisition of the series’ library, went on for three more seasons as a Hulu original, including a supersized 26-episode Season 4.

It was one of the first Hulu series to stick as the platform had launched a big push into original programming under Craig Erwich, then Hulu’s SVP and Head of Content who continues to oversee Hulu’s original slate in his current role as president of Disney Television Group. (Another standout in that initial crop of originals included WBTV’s limited series 11.22.63.)

“Mindy has been a beloved member of the Hulu family, so this deal is a natural extension of our relationship,” Erwich said at the time of The Mindy Project‘s 2015 pickup.

Following The Mindy Project, Kaling went on to co-create/co-develop hit series Never Have I Ever for Netflix and The Sex Lives of College Girls and Velma for Max. Fittingly, Murray Hill is her first series as solo creator since The Mindy Project.

Kaling is repped by CAA and 3 Arts.
