EXCLUSIVE: Canadian comedy Run the Burbs has been picked up by Hulu for its second window in the U.S.

Fifth Season struck the deal with the streamer for the comedy from Kim’s Convenience star Andrew Phung, with the first two seasons set to drop on Hulu on New Year’s Eve, a few days before the third launches on Canada’s CBC.

Produced by Pier 21 Films, Run the Burbs stars Phung at the center of a Vietnamese/South Asian-Canadian family. He plays a stay-at-home dad with an entrepreneur wife and two kids, who each take a different approach to living life to the fullest in the suburbs, changing the way the audience thinks about family values and suburban life. Alongside Phung, the series stars a number of established and emerging comedians including Rakhee Morzaria, YouTuber Julie Nolke, radio host Ali Hassan and Baroness von Sketch Show co-creator and star Aurora Browne.

The deal is second window and is unrelated to The CW’s acquisition of Run the Burbs over the summer. The comedy was, however, pulled a few weeks ago from The CW linear but remains on its app and website. Hulu already holds U.S. rights to Jared Keeso’s soon-to-end Canadian comedy Letterkenny.

Fifth Season TV Distribution President Prentiss Fraser hailed “incredible home-grown hits” on CBC including Schitt’s Creek, Workin’ Moms and Kim’s Convenience. “Run The Burbs is definitely a continuation of this tradition,” she added. “Hulu is the perfect partner to bring the Pham family to audiences in the U.S., and we couldn’t be more excited for Andrew’s hilarious, uplifting and inclusive project to launch on the service.”

The move comes a few months prior to Hulu combining its app with Disney.

Phung is represented by Oldfield Talent Management. Fifth Season handles worldwide sales for Run The Burbs outside of Canada. Executive Producers are Laszlo Barna, Nicole Butler, Karen Tsang, and Vanessa Steinmetz (for Pier 21 Films), Phung, and Scott Townend. The series is produced with the participation of the Canada Media Fund, with film and television tax credit assistance from the Government of Ontario, and the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit.
