Hugh Jackman Reveals Official Title and First Poster Art for 'Wolverine 3'

Just yesterday, Hugh Jackman stated that his third solo outing as Marvel’s mutant Wolverine would be “very different in tone and hopefully to anything we’ve done.” And right on cue, that claim has now been bolstered by the debut of the film’s first poster, which reveals its official title — and suggests that persistent rumors about its storyline may well be true.

Today on Twitter (via Slashfilm), Jackman posted a picture of a giant billboard of the movie’s initial poster art, which was quickly followed by director James Mangold’s high-res version of the image.

The most obvious news from the poster is that we can start calling Wolverine 3 by its official title, Logan. And the poster image and title certainly won’t slow ongoing speculation that its plot will be drawn from the “Old Man Logan” comic series, which features an aged Wolverine navigating a future America that’s been conquered by supervillains. Otherwise, the poster may raise more questions than it answers. Who is the young girl holding Wolverine’s clawed hand? Is it his daughter? Or, maybe, is it the future female Wolverine clone, X-23, whom Bryan Singer has suggested might appear on the big screen? And why does Wolverine’s arm have a scar, when one of his superpowers is regenerative healing?

With regard to that last mystery, a clue can be found in a page from the Logan script that Mangold tweeted out this morning (see it below). It describes the overall gritty tone of the material, in which “people will get hurt or killed when s–t falls on them. They will get just as hurt or just as killed if they get hit with something big and heavy like, say, a car.” And as for Wolverine, “he’s older now and it’s clear his abilities aren’t what they once were. He’s fading on the inside and his diminished healing factor keeps him in a constant state of chronic pain — hence booze as a painkiller.”

We also know that Logan will be the first X-Men film to reach theaters with an R rating, and it’ll serve as the final X-Men outing for Jackman, and perhaps also for Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier. Co-starring Richard Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, and Elizabeth Rodriguez, the film is set for a March 3 theatrical release.
