Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman Lead Epic Trailer for Baz Luhrmann's Miniseries “Faraway Downs”

'Faraway Downs,' a six-episode reimagining of Baz Luhrmann's 2008 movie 'Australia,' begins streaming on Hulu Nov. 26

Baz Luhrmann is throwing it back to 2008!

On Thursday, Hulu released the trailer for Faraway Things, described as a "six-chapter reimagining" of the filmmaker's 2008 epic film Australia.

The trailer meets Nicole Kidman's character Lady Sarah Ashley as she arrives in Australia some time after her husband's death to take over his property, called Faraway Downs. Once there, she meets a cattle rancher played by Hugh Jackman and an indigenous child named Nullah (Brandon Walters), who teaches her to love the countryside.

Trouble meets Lady Ashley, Drover (Jackman) and Nullah when the police arrive, intending to arrest the child. Lady Ashley dismisses the law enforcement officers and resolves to save the cattle ranch with Drover and Nullah's help — all amidst the backdrop of Australia's involvement in the Pacific theater of World War II.

An official synopsis for the project reads that Lady Ashley, an English aristocrat, "travels halfway across the world to confront her wayward husband and sell an unusual asset: a million-acre cattle ranch in the Australian Outback called ‘Faraway Downs.' "

"Following the death of her husband, a ruthless Australian cattle baron, King Carney (Bryan Brown), plots to take her land and she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn cattle drover (Hugh Jackman) to protect her ranch," the synopsis reads.

Nullah, the child Lady Ashley meets upon settling at Faraway Downs, is a "a bi-racial Indigenous Australian child caught up in the government's draconian racial policy now referred to as the 'Stolen Generations.' "

The film promises a love affair between Kidman and Jackman's characters as well as "the unavoidable impact of World War II on Northern Australia" over a period of four years, per the synopsis.

Faraway Downs was originally released as Luhrmann's 2008 film Australia, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design at the 81st Oscars. Luhrmann initially announced he would rework the movie into a six-episode miniseries, complete with a new ending, back in June 2022.

"I originally set out to take the notion of the sweeping, Gone With the Wind–style epic and turn it on its head — a way of using romance and epic drama to shine a light on the roles of First Nations people and the painful scar in Australian history of the 'Stolen Generations,' " Luhrmann said in a statement at the time. "While Australia the film has its own life, there was another telling of this story; one with different layers, nuances and even alternative plot twists that an episodic format has allowed us to explore."

Faraway Downs begins streaming on Hulu Nov. 26.
