Have you ever wondered how Willy Wonka became a reclusive, eccentric and iconic chocolatier? A new movie sheds light on that question.

“Wonka,” which will be released in theaters on Dec. 15, stars Timothée Chalamet as the titular character in a musical fantasy film.

Other stars are attached to the project, like Hugh Grant, Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, Calah Lane, Sally Hawkins, Isy Suttie and Natasha Rothwell.

The premise of “Wonka” is simple. Wonka is a chocolatier who has a penchant for zany inventions and a creative imagination. He’s seen making affordable chocolate that anyone in the town can buy. He has to battle against the Chocolate Cartel, which has the town’s monopoly on chocolate, as he makes his own chocolate factory.

Paul King, filmmaker behind “Paddington,” is the creator, director and co-writer. He decided to make “Wonka” because he loved reading Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” as a child.

“It was one of the first books I ever properly fell in love with and was reading to myself. I had this very old-fashioned copy where all the pages would come out ’cause I read it (so much),” King told Entertainment Weekly.

His love of the book continued into adulthood and this time, King said to Entertainment Weekly, he was inspired to tell a story where Wonka wasn’t just an eccentric inventor, but instead he “was actually the emotional heart of the movie.”

It’s not the first time Dahl’s book has been adapted to the big screen.

In 2005, Tim Burton directed “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” which starred Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket. Mel Stuart directed “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” in 1971, which starred Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka and Peter Ostrum as Charlie Bucket.

King told Entertainment Weekly his film won’t replace the 1971 movie and he’s “just happy to embrace that and walk in those enormous footsteps” by putting his own spin on the story.

Warner Bros. released the second trailer for the film on Thursday.

The trailer shows Chalamet clumsily fumbling around as an inventor, magician and chocolatier. His real talent lies in chocolate making. He receives praise for making some of the best chocolate the people in his city make.

Then, people associated with other chocolate companies are shown conspiring to take Wonka down. His head is dunked in a fountain as he is threatened by someone telling him not to make any more chocolate.

Grant also appears as an Oompa-Loompa in the trailer and sings part of the famous ditty associated with Oompa-Loompas.
