How the Hoff Saved ‘Baywatch’

It’s National Give Thanks to David Hasselhoff for Saving Baywatch Day! What is National Give Thanks to David Hasselhoff for Saving Baywatch Day, you ask? Let us tell you. National Give Thanks to David Hasselhoff for Saving Baywatch Day is a celebration that we made up to commemorate the 25 year anniversary of the syndicated premiere of Baywatch!

After only one season on NBC, Baywatch was tragically canceled for placing 73rd out of 103 shows in the ratings, but because the Hoff saw limitless potential in a series about sexy lifeguards saving sexy lives and solving sexy crimes on the sexy beaches of Los Angeles, he refused to go down without a fight. So the Hoff and the creators sold the show to the first-run syndication market, and an international hit was born.

Over 11 seasons, 242 episodes, and hundreds of mouth-to-mouth maneuvers, Baywatch made stars out of Pamela Anderson, Erika Eleniak, and Carmen Electra. It also spawned a couple spin-offs, including Baywatch Nights, in which the Hoff’s Mitch Buchannon character solved insane sci-fi mysteries, like a really sexy X-Files with an incredible theme song by Lou Rawls.

So today we say, Thank you, David Hasselhoff. We feel #blessed that you breathed new life into Baywatch like you so often did for the nearly drowned. And thanks for that episode in which Hulk Hogan wrestled a bad guy in order to save the youth center. That was awesome.
