Houston-UTSA game postponed because of Hurricane Harvey will not be rescheduled (Update)

Houston and UTSA announced Wednesday that its game originally scheduled for Sept. 2 will not be made up this season. Instead, the two sides “will work together to reschedule the game for a date in a future year.”
Officials from The University of Texas at San Antonio and the University of Houston agreed on Wednesday that the previously postponed game between the two schools will not be made up this season.
Following recovery from Hurricane Harvey, administrators from both universities will work together to reschedule the game for a date in a future year. This game is part of a four-game series that calls for two home contests for each program. UTSA and Houston will face off again on Sept. 3, 2022, at TDECU Stadium in Houston, on Sept. 2, 2023, at the Alamodome and on Aug. 31, 2024, back in Houston.
All tickets will be refunded and ticket holders do not need to do anything to receive a refund. Detailed information on this process will be disseminated by the UTSA Ticket Office to all ticket holders.
Houston and UTSA will both open their seasons on Saturday night. The Cougars will travel to Arizona while UTSA faces Baylor in Waco.

Houston will not play at Texas-San Antonio on Saturday because of Hurricane Harvey.
The news of the game’s postponement was announced Tuesday afternoon by the Houston athletic department as part of a school-wide cancellation of all athletic events for the weekend. The Houston area is dealing with catastrophic flooding from the hurricane and some parts of the area are expected to receive approximately 50 inches of rain before the storm finally moves away.
The game was scheduled to be played in San Antonio and Houston said the schools “will explore rescheduling the game for a date later in the season.”
“The epic disaster that continues to unfold in and around the City of Houston has made it evident that our athletic events are not a priority at this time,” Houston athletic director Hunter Yurachek said in a statement. “Our focus during the coming days will be on assisting the City of Houston and University of Houston communities in recovery efforts and allowing our coaches, staff and student-athletes to devote the necessary time to ensuring the safety and security of their family, friends and loved ones. We are very appreciative of the UH fan base and supporters, UTSA and their Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey along with our counterparts at LSU, Mississippi State, George Mason and Houston Baptist, in supporting this decision.”

Cross country, soccer and volleyball teams also saw their events canceled. The postponement of the football game means Houston will kick off its 2017 season vs. Arizona on Sept. 9.
Houston’s open date in 2017 comes on Nov. 11 while UTSA’s is on Sept. 30. UTSA’s Nov. 11 opponent, UAB, also is off on Sept. 30. If Houston and UTSA want to make sure they play, moving the UAB game (if possible) to Sept. 30 and UTSA and Houston playing Nov. 11 would make the most sense.
Houston’s football team practice in Austin at the Texas campus last weekend as Harvey made landfall. As part of the announcement of the game’s postponement, the University of Houston also encouraged people to donate to the Red Cross or the Greater Houston Community Foundation.
