Houston moving practices to Texas campus in advance of Hurricane Harvey
With Hurricane Harvey expected to officially make landfall on the Texas gulf coast Friday night, Houston has moved football practices further north.
The school said it will practice Saturday and Sunday at the University of Texas in Austin in the hopes of returning back to the city afterwards. Harvey, a category 3 hurricane, is set to hit the coast northeast of Corpus Christi and southwest of Houston.
There are areas in Texas that could see a storm surge of over 10 feet and total rainfall of three feet because the storm is anticipated to linger over the region for almost a week.
“We are grateful to the University of Texas and its football program for opening their doors to us,” Houston coach Major Applewhite said in a statement. “We are also thankful to the other programs from across the state of Texas that offered shelter to our program during this time. We are hopeful for the best in Houston but are preparing for every situation. We ask everyone to keep the city of Houston, all affected areas across the Gulf Coast and its residents in their thoughts and prayers.”

Applewhite is a former Texas quarterback and former Houston coach Tom Herman is now the Longhorns’ coach.
Houston opens the season Sep. 2 at Texas-San Antonio.
