House of the Dragon is officially returning to HBO next summer.

The second season of the Game of Thrones spinoff will air in early summer 2024, as long eyed by the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network.

The news was confirmed by Casey Bloys at an HBO event in New York this morning, where members of the press saw the first trailer for the second season.

The show, which has finished filming and is currently in post-production, was largely able to continue filming during the summer as it has a largely British cast under Equity contracts rather than SAG-AFTRA ones.

Elsewhere, Bloys said that the hope is for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, its latest GoT prequel to start shooting in the spring.

This series was handed a greenlight in April and is based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk & Egg fantasy novellas. The Game of Thrones prequel series is written and executive produced by Martin and Ira Parker. House of the Dragon co-creator/exec producer/showrunner Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis will also executive produce.

House of the Dragon is set 172 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen.

It stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans.

Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin executive produce with Sara Hess, Vince Gerardis, Season 2 director Alan Taylor and Season 1 director/co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik.

Season two will consist of eight episodes, rather than ten, two fewer than season one. It is part of a long-term plan for the show, which includes HBO mulling a green light for a third season, Deadline understands.
