“House of the Dragon” boss congratulated Milly Alcock on Supergirl casting: 'Literally the sky's the limit'

Ryan Condal, the co-creator of the "Game of Thrones" prequel, shares how he reacted when he heard his star landed the job.

When 24-year-old Sydney actor Milly Alcock landed the role of Hollywood's next Supergirl after getting her big break on HBO's House of the Dragon, Ryan Condal, her Game of Thrones prequel showrunner, reached out with his congrats.

"We texted back and forth, but I had heard a rumor that she was up for it in the final running. There was something else going on that I think her reps needed a letter from me or something like that for immigration. It was something very boring," Condal tells Entertainment Weekly. "So I was just texting with her to say, 'It's all taken care of. Let me know if you need anything else. By the way, are you Supergirl?' And then I got back a series of emojis that totally did not answer the question, but did intrigue me."

Alcock was formally announced in the role of DC's Kara Zor-El in January. She was reportedly in contention with a number of other actors, including The Winchesters and Supergirl voice actor in animated films Meg Donnelly, Cailee Spaeny from Priscilla, and Emilia Jones from CODA.

"When the news actually broke that she was, I said, 'This is incredible and I'm so proud of you,'" Condal continues. "She's just such a wonderful person and young actor. Sky's the limit in front of her now. Literally the sky's the limit because you will be flying through it. But it's just crazy to me, and I'm so proud of her and so happy for her, and I think it's great. I'm just hoping that she ends up filming at Leavesden [the U.K. studio where they shoot House of the Dragon] so that we can hang out on each other's sets."

Alcock burst into the international limelight when she starred in the first five episodes of House of the Dragon as Rhaenyra Targaryen, the heir to the Iron Throne during the lead up to the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Emma D'Arcy now maintains the lead role after a major time jump in the first season brought audiences to meet the character in her adult years.

Despite no plans to bring back Alcock as young Rhaenyra for House of the Dragon (yet), she will be plenty busy with DC. After Superman — which stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor — she will reprise the character across the DC films, including headlining her own Superman: Woman of Tomorrow movie.

"So excited to be a part of the DC fam," Alcock said in a statement at the time of her casting. "Thank you so much to @jamesgunn for trusting me with Kara / Supergirl."
