‘Some Like It Hot’ to Close on Broadway in December

Some Like It Hot, the Tony-winning musical based on the 1959 MGM and United Artists film of the same name, is closing on Broadway in December.

Producers announced the show’s plan to close in 13 weeks on Friday. The musical, which made history for nonbinary star J. Harrison Ghee’s best lead actor in a musical Tony win, will play through Dec. 30 at the Shubert Theatre.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to bring one of the greatest comedy films of all time to the stage with a completely fresh approach,” said producers Robert Wankel and Neil Meron. “We want to thank the creative team, cast and company of Some Like It Hot who have created an entertaining and moving show that has delighted audiences for the past year, bringing joyous laughter to the Shubert Theatre. We are thrilled to see this production’s journey continue beyond Broadway with the national tour next season and a future West End production as well.”

Nominated for 13 Tony awards, the musical was among a handful of productions, like fellow Tony winner Kimberly Akimbo, that were struggling at the box office and benefited from the regular boost award-winning shows typically see following the ceremony. In June, following the musical’s wins, its weekly box office gross reached a high of more than $1 million before steadily declining.

This year, both the musical and Tony Awards caught extra attention after the awards show was initially denied a waver for its televised ceremony during the writers strike. The Tonys later proceeded as scheduled on June 11, as an unscripted broadcast, after the Writers Guild of America agreed not to picket the event.

In addition to its best lead actor Tony win, Some Like It Hot also won for best choreography, best orchestrations and best costumes.

The show is slated to launch a national tour in 2024 followed by a West End production in 2025. That will be produced by The Shubert Organization and Neil Meron in partnership with Ambassador Theatre Group.

Some Like It Hot opened on Dec. 11, 2022, following November previews. The musical features a book by Matthew López and Amber Ruffin, music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw. The original cast includes Ghee, Christian Borle, Adrianna Hicks, Kevin Del Aguila and NaTasha Yvette Williams.

The show was produced by The Shubert Organization and Neil Meron and co-produced by MGM on Stage. Other co-producers include Roy Furman, Robert Greenblatt, James L. Nederlander, Kenny Leon, Hunter Arnold, John Gore Organization, The Dalgleish Library Company Group, Sheboygan Conservatory Partners, Ambassador Theatre Group Productions, Bob Boyett, Cue to Cue Productions, Janet and Marvin Rosen, The Araca Group, Concord Theatricals, Marc Howard, Independent Presenters Network, Juanita Jordan, Jujamcyn Theaters, Henry R. Muñoz III, Ostar and Mariah Carey. D. S. Moynihan executive produced.
