Even years after her death, Carolyn Bessette remains a mystery. Despite being a fashion icon in both life and death, and the wife of John F. Kennedy Jr, she remained private throughout it all. To this day, there is less than 10 seconds of audio of her voice on public record, and she never did an interview at the height of her fame. Many friends and eyewitnesses claimed she was petrified of being under the microscope, and she grew even more scared and paranoid after a sudden death in the 1990s.

Some of Bessette’s closest pals recall her saying she grew even more “terrified” of the paparazzi, after Princess Diana’s death.

For those who don’t know, Diana tragically passed away on August 31, 1997, alongside her partner Dodi Fayed and their driver Henri Paul in Paris, France. They died after being in a car crash while she and her team were trying to flee from the paparazzi.

Now, Kennedy did try to make the paparazzi calm down soon after they got married in 1996. Per Glamour via Yahoo, he spoke in front of a bunch of reporters, saying, “I just ask [for] any privacy or room you could give her [Carolyn] as she makes that adjustment. It would be greatly appreciated.”

But over time, he grew less sympathetic. In Kathy McKeon’s memoir Jackie’s Girl, she recounted how Kennedy tried to convince Bessette to try to emulate his mother more when it came to the paparazzi. Her response? She allegedly said, “I hate those ba****ds.”

“She told us about them cornering her and running and chasing her into a building and they were right on top of her,” Kathy’s husband Seamus McKeon added. “She said, ‘I’m terrified of them.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Bessette’s distaste for the shutterbugs. Not only was she reportedly terrified of them, and tried to avoid them as much as possible, but they were allegedly the big reason why she held off on having children with Kennedy.
