The first film was a massive commercial success, earning $209.6 million at the global box office against a $35–37 million budget. In comparison, the second film’s performance was quite lukewarm. It accumulated $107.7 million at the box office against its $42 million budget.

If the popularity of the first film resulted in the production of the second, Horrible Bosses 2’s less-than-stellar outing has basically put the prospect of the third film in limbo. Appearing on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast in August 2020, Jason Bateman, who portrays Nick Hendricks in the first two films, said the second one was “garbage” in terms of box-office numbers. He cited creative complications and a Thanksgiving release as some of the reasons for the film’s failure.

“A lot of people saw the first one, but there are plenty of films that made a lot of money where no one is interested in seeing another one,” the actor explained. “People just weren’t interested in seeing another one. ‘We saw the first one, we had fun, and I don’t need to go see a second one.'”

However, we can’t entirely rule out the possibility of the third Horrible Bosses. Charlie Day, who plays Dale Arbus, told PopCulture in February 2022 that he would love to do Horrible Bosses 3. So, the fans can hold on to the hope that it might happen sometime down the line.
