New Home Alone movie lands mixed first reviews ahead of Disney+ release

First reviews of the new Home Alone movie are in, hinting that Disney+'s upcoming holiday flick can't quite compare to the first two in the franchise.
Titled Home Sweet Home Alone, the new movie bears almost no relation to its predecessors. Still, it has big shoes to fill.
Much like our beloved Home Alone OG Kevin McCallister's (Macaulay Culkin) adventure, the new movie kicks off with some frantic packing ahead of an international travel.

Protagonist Max Mercer (Archie Yates) and his big, extended family are off to Japan for Christmas. In true Home Alone fashion, Max is inadvertently left behind to fend for himself from criminal couple, Pam and Jeff Fritzovski (Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney).
You know the drill: Max turns out to be not as innocent and helpless as his mom Carol (Aisling Bea) and dad Blake (Pete Holmes) think he is and will give the two comical baddies a hard time. On his side, Max has police officer and Kevin's brother Buzz McCallister (Devin Ratray, reprising his role from the first two films).
Will the same plot that turned Home Alone into a cult more than 30 years ago work this time around? Critics are on the fence.

"One of those 21st-century sequels that cares more about inserting Easter eggs for the original film than it does providing similar entertainment value," the AV Club review reads.
"The elements that most liberally pull from the original Home Alone are somehow the most rewarding on offer in Home Sweet Home Alone, but will likely lead audiences to simply watch that one instead," IndieWire says of the new film.

Among mostly negative reviews, there are a few keeping the hopes of the staunchest fans of the franchise high.
"Home Sweet Home Alone holds its own, a new spin on an old tale that keeps the spirit of the original alive," Detroit News writes.
"It won't necessarily go down as a classic, but Home Sweet Home Alone is a fun family film for the holidays that kids will have a blast with, while there are enough gags to make it an enjoyable diversion for parents as well," ComicBookMovie.com says.
Home Sweet Home Alone comes to Disney+ on November 12.
