To paraphrase Sam Elliott: there are no such things as gay cowboys.

To paraphrase Jane Campion, director of The Power of the Dog: shut your fucking mouth, I'm about to win Best Director for a movie about a gay cowboy.

You see, these are the high-minded conversations that are swirling around this year's Academy Awards. On Sunday night, the big contenders will battle it out over the most prestigious award in film: The Oscar. The March 27 ceremony, hosted by Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes, and Amy Schumer, will kick off (officially) at 8 p.m. on ABC. But for the real Academy-heads, you know that the fun starts well before then. The red carpet special will start 90 minutes beforehand at 6:30 p.m., hosted by none other than Netflix multi-hyphenate, Vanessa Hudgens.

This year a few tweaks have been made to the show in hopes of expediting the ceremony that, historically, has had issues with lagging, sagging, and dragging in places. Controversially, that means cutting awards for industry-centric categories like makeup and sound from the live show broadcast. Thankfully, the show will continue to boast performances from Best Original Song nominees, which includes Reba McEntire, Beyoncé, and Billie Eilish.

The race for Best Picture is a shockingly tight one this year, with nominees including Belfast, CODA, Don't Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog, and West Side Story. Unfortunately, the Oscars are not streaming anywhere, so anyone hoping to watch the ceremony will have to watch it via your local ABC affiliate, or on the ABC app with a login from an active cable provider.

Here's to wishing everyone good luck—and that no one falls down walking up the stairs. Oh, and best wishes to the gay cowboys out there.
