Hollywood Women Express Despair Over Possibility of Trump Presidency

UPDATED: Hillary Clinton’s surprise weakness on election night and the rise of Donald Trump to the brink of the presidency had many in Hollywood in despair Tuesday night. Women who had been anticipating celebrating a historic victory by Clinton as the first woman president were particularly exorcised by the results.

“I am sad to see that misogyny, sexism and racism are alive and well in our country,” producer and former United Artists chief executive Paula Wagner said in a message to Variety.

Actress Rose McGowan took to Twitter to express her outrage. “The hatred for women is so deep, so real. It must be dealt with immediately. It must excised,” she wrote. She concluded with an expletive, directed at”misogynists.”

Actress Martha Plimpton retweeted an imagined conversation by British public historian Greg Jenner. It read:

BRITAIN: “Hey, America, watch this!”

USA: “Cool. Can I borrow your lighter?”

Early in the evening, as results started to go against Clinton, comedian Julia Louis-Dreyfus tweeted out a clip from her hit show “Veep.” It showed her character, President Selina Meyer, demanding that her staff force an end to a presidential vote recount. Louis-Dreyfus included the message: “STOP THE COUNT!”

Another stalwart Clinton backer, Katy Perry, also expressed strong emotions Tuesday night. “Gonna cry my false eye lashes off tonight,” Perry said on Twitter. Her message included emojis of a heart, praying hands and the American flag. The message went out early enough that it was unclear whether Perry was still anticipating tears of joy in a Clinton victory or heartbreak that Trump was showing well in early returns.
