Hollywood Music in Media Awards Honor Billie Eilish, Hans Zimmer, Nicholas Britell, Rufus Wainwright and More

Honors were given out in more than 30 categories at Wednesday’s 12th annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards, with singer-songwriters like Billie Eilish, H.E.R., Adam Levine and Rufus Wainwright being celebrated in the live webcast as well as composers including Hans Zimmer, Rachel Portman, Alberto Iglesias and Nicholas Britell.

The HMMAs reward songwriters, composers and even performers in fields that include not just film and TV work but everything from video games to commercials to theme park music.

Film nominations are given in multiple genres, which allows for a series of short lists that members of the Academy’s music branch may end up studying as they vote for the Oscars’ much, much shorter lists.

Best score for a feature film went to Britell for his work on Adam McKay’s satirical “Don’t Look Up.” Other score prizes went to Zimmer for “Dune” (sci-fi/fantasy film), Beltrami for “A Quiet Place II” (horror film), Mychael Danna and Jeff Danna for “The Addams Family 2” (animated film), Portman for “Juiia” (documentary), National members Bryce and Aaron Dessner for “C’mon C’mon” (independent film) and Iglesias for “Parallel Mothers” (foreign film).

Best song for a feature film was awarded to Eilish and her brother Finneas for the theme from the James Bond film “No Time to Die.” Song trophies were also given to Wainwright for his song from “Rebel Hearts” (documentary film), Maroon 5 frontman Levine and co-writers Karl Johan Schuster, Savan Kotecha and Oscar Gorres for a tune from “Paw Patrol” (animated film) and the writing team of Nick Baxter, Siân Heder, Marius de Vries and Matt Dahan for a number from “Coda” (independent film).

New categories were introduced this year, most notably outstanding on-screen performance in a film, which extends the awards not just to writers and composers but into the realm of actors and on-screen performers. That went to Amelia Jones (pictured above with her trophy) singing and signing Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” in the Apple Plus feature “Coda,” giving that film its second award of the night.

Best score for a TV show or limited series went to Jung Jae-il for “Squid Game.” For song from a TV show or limited series, recent Oscar winner H.E.R. won for the song she sang in Netflix’s “We thePeople,” along with co-writers Maxx Moore, David Harris, Ronald Colson and Jeff Gitelman.

Edgar Wright’s “The Sparks Brothers” won best documentary film. Two Wright films produced winners: the music for “Last Night in Soho” was awarded for best soundtrack. “Respect” picked up best musical biopic. Bo Burnham’s “Inside” won for live concert for a visual medium.

In the music supervisor categories, Tracy McKnight won in the film division for her work on the Sean Penn film “Flag Day,” while in TV show/limited series, Tony Von Pervieux and Christa Miller shared the honor for “Ted Lasso.”
