Hollywood Bowl’s 2024 Season to Feature Marvel Tribute, Mitski, Jason Isbell, Roots Picnic, Henry Mancini Salute, and Laufey and Beck With the LA Phil

The 2024 summer season at the Hollywood Bowl was announced by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Tuesday, with highlights including a first-time Marvel Studios night; LA Phil-accompanied shows by Laufey, Beck, Natalia Lafourcade and Harry Connick Jr.; the inaugural edition of a west coast iteration of hip-hop’s celebrated Roots Picnic; tributes to Henry Mancini and Sammy Davis Jr.; the return of Zubin Mehta; and standard, non-orchestral gigs by Jason Isbell, Mitski. Mt. Joy, Boyz II Men and many others.

Returning favorites include the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival (which replaced the Playboy Jazz Festival), a Juneteenth celebration, fireworks spectaculars over the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends, a Tchaikovsky Spectacular, the traditional sing-along screening of “The Sound of Music” and — of course — a little John Williams and a lot of Gustavo Dudamel.

Sure to be one of the most sought-after tickets is the global debut of Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga Concert Experience, conducted by Dudamel. It’s described as a concert that will “transport audiences on a cinematic journey through the franchise’s first 23 films, weaving together the legendary characters of the Marvel universe into one story from an all-new perspective.”

The handful of nights when performers from the pop world are paired with the Phil typically provide some of the greatest only-in-L.A. experiences. As Variety predicted last year when Laufey was killing it with the Phil across the ravine at the Ford, the singer will make the leap over to the Bowl on Aug. 7. Beck is a Bowl veteran who’ll be doing his first show with the Phil on July 6. Connick will join the signature orchestra for real and figurative fireworks (July 2-4). And Natalia Lafourcade, an 18-time Latin Grammy winner, will join Dudamel and company Sept, 6-7.

The Roots Picnic will bring the perennial east coast favorite west on June 29, with the Roots joined by Queen Latifah, Common, Digable Planets, Arrested Development, the Pharcyde and Black Sheep.

Other artists outside of the classical realms who’ll be playing this summer include Patti Labelle (July 7), Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit with Sylvan Esso (July 21), Chaka Khan (July 26), India.Arie (Aug. 9), the Gipsy Kings (Aug. 16-17), Gary Clark Jr. with the War and Treaty (Aug. 21), Mt. Joy (Aug. 25), Trombone Shorty (Sept. 4), Vance Joy (Sept. 8), Boyz II Mean (Sept. 13-15), Rodrigo y Gabriela (Sept. 18), cumbia artists Grupo Cañaveral de Humberto Pabón, La Sonora Dinamita, and Los Hermanos Flores (Sept. 22), and Mitski with Sharon Van Etten (Sept. 28).

For film score lovers, this year’s official opening night attraction is a 100th birthday salute to the late Henry Mancini, featuring Michael Bublé, Dave Koz and Monica Mancini (June 23). John Williams will be back in the flesh for orchestral accompaniment to film clips, joined by David Newman (July 12-13). A screening of “Singin’ in the Rain” will have David Newman conducting the LA Phil (Aug. 27). Marvel isn’t alone among studios in getting a singular salute: Disney will get its own tribute July 19-20, specifically to the studio’s films from the ’80s ad ’90s.

Opera stars on board include Diana Damrau and Jonas Kaufmann. Classical giants booked throughout the summer include Joshua Bell, Augustin Hadelich, Diana Damrau, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Jonas Kaufmann, Midori, Pinchas Zukerman, Ray Chen and Yunchan Lim.

The lineup for the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival on June 15-16 includes Jodeci, Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Yebba, Christian McBride, Cory Henry, Charles Lloyd, Baby Rose, the Soul Rebels with Seun Kuti, Mulatu Astatke, Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band, Alex Isley, Aneesa Strings and the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance Ensemble at UCLA. Another jazz standout is “Herbie Hancock Head Hunters 50th,” resurrecting thst classic albums’s original 1973 lineup of Harvey Mason, Bennie Maupin,and Bill Summers, with Marcus Miller taking the place of the late fPaul Jackson (Aug. 14).

Tickets will go on sale on a staggered basis. New subscriptions and group sales for the summer series are now on sale. “Create your own” packages will be offered in just over a month, on March 19. But it’ll be another three months before individual tickets go on sale — on May 7.
