Hollyoaks star Callum Kerr has warned that his character George Kiss will get a lot worse in the soap's coercive control plot.

The Channel 4 series recently launched a dark, issue-based story for John Paul McQueen (James Sutton) and his boyfriend PC George Kiss (Kerr), and viewers have seen George manipulate both John Paul and his former partner Dean in recent weeks.

As well as tricking John Paul into believing that he was killed on New Year's Day, George has recently turned violent against his boyfriend, and his disturbing behaviour is also set to take another dark turn in upcoming scenes as he tries to convince the villagers that John Paul is an abusive partner too.

And now, actor Callum Kerr has shared that George's behaviour will only get worse over the coming weeks and months.

"We take it a few months at a time and this storyline is doing well at the moment and we are still filming this kind of sinister George Kiss and I think he will get worse before he gets better – if he gets better," he told The Scottish Sun.

The actor also admitted that George's actions have started turning Hollyoaks fans against the character, and Callum is bracing himself for their outraged reactions on the street once lockdown lifts.

"You don't see the fans on the street as much – or at all now," he shared.

"But they are all quite active online so I've had a few people be like, 'I used to love your character and now I hate you.' The storyline is very believable so hopefully I'm doing a good enough job to have it come across that this character is that evil."

He continued: "I can speak for everyone when I say I'm looking forward to getting back out and Covid is over.

"Any kind of social communication would be great right now, even if it was an old lady screaming at me. I'm sure I can talk them down when I'm out there, I'll say, 'It's not me, it's the character!'"

The actor also went on to add that he hopes the soap's coercive control plot can shine a light on abusive relationships and help those who may find themselves in a similar situation.

"When the storyline came up we had a meeting with all the execs and went over some real-life stories," he shared.

"You hear stories on TV and stuff like that and now that we are doing the storyline, there's a lot of people coming out online and saying they've been through something similar and said it's good that we're bringing a light to this issue that people can have.

"Especially at the moment with everyone being locked inside, domestic violence has gone up and so it's something that might not have been on purpose, but it's come at a good time.

"Hopefully people watching the show might recognise if they are in an abusive relationship or if someone they love or know is in an abusive relationship.

"It's a cliché to say but even if it helps one person it would be worth it."

Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes from Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
