Holiday music, big laughs and, yes, a musical about Gloria Estefan on busy beach slate

While deejays and Top-40 cover bands rule the roost at beach music venues on most Friday and Saturday evenings, other days of the week offer entertainment for those who prefer something a little more out of the ordinary. Such will be the case with some fun goings-on scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 3.

Ocean City to get symphony show, musical about Gloria Estefan

In Ocean City, the OC Performing Arts Center continues to have a busy schedule that will continue into the winter and spring and which includes an afternoon concert this weekend.

The Mid-Atlantic Symphony’s annual Holiday Joy performance is set for for 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3 ($55). This year’s featured vocal soloists (who will also have a few duets) are baritone Rob McGinness and soprano Claire Galloway.

Tickets are also on sale for the international touring production "On Your Feet: The Story of Emilio & Gloria Estefan." The musical will take place at the center at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17 ($55 to $75).

Another Sunday, Dec. 3, event will take place in Fenwick Island at the House of Sauce. The laughs will flow when the restaurant and pub presents the latest edition of its free Get Sauced Comedy Open-Mic. The chuckles commence at 6 p.m., with signups taking place just beforehand at 5:45 p.m.

Last but not least Sunday, Dec. 3, a “low ticket alert” has been issued by the Milton Theatre for an all-ages concert. Festive Frenzy: The American Rogues’ Holiday Spectacular is set for 8 p.m. ($27, $35). The Celtic-rock touring act’s annual appearances have garnered it a loyal Sussex County following.

The Milton Theatre’s 10-show run of its own stage production of "The Sound of Music" continues at various times and dates through Sunday, Dec. 10 (with ticket prices ranging from $27 to $43).

Listening Booth keep heating up with great acoustic shows

As we mentioned last week, The Listening Booth is drawing a steady stream of fans of original acoustic music at its new spot in the Tanger Outlets center at Midway. Located on southbound Route 1 (across the highway from the Movies at Midway), it will host a sold-out concert Thursday, Nov. 30, featuring The Honey Badgers, Sug Daniels, Cal Toner and Lavender Browne.

On Saturday, Dec. 2, The Listening Booth will present the return of folk-rock singer Antje Duvekot ($25.) Opening act Zoe Fitzgerald Carter will kick things off at 6:30 p.m. Nellie McKay and special guest Joe Barbella will perform at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 5 ($25).

After a several-week layoff, the weekly Open Mic Night will return at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, with free admission as usual.

Celebrate Winter Wine Fest at Ocean City's Fager's Island

Back in Ocean City, tickets are on sale now for next week’s annual Winter Wine Fest at Fager’s Island. This year’s edition will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9. Live party music will be provided by Making Waves ($72).

In other entertainment news, comedy icon Dan Ackroyd mentioned in a recent podcast that his current incarnation of the Blues Brothers (with Jim Belushi in place of his brother, the late John Belushi) will tour America this spring and summer. Ackroyd said a show will take place in Delaware some time in June, but didn’t specify a location; we’ll have updates in this column when more information becomes available.
