Holby City spoilers follow.

Holby City's Sahira Shah made her exit from the show tonight as she made a huge sacrifice for her teenage son Abs and was arrested for the murder of her father, Reyhan.

Last week's episode ended with a shock cliffhanger as Reyhan (Raad Rawi) passed away just hours after being admitted to the hospital, sparking a mystery over how he died.

This week's episode began with Chloe Godard (Amy Lennox) raising the alarm that something was amiss with Reyhan's death.

After pointing out that there was something suspicious about Reyhan's passing, Fletch (Alex Walkinshaw) came to the conclusion that a post-mortem would be needed to determine exactly what had happened, leaving Henrik Hanssen (Guy Henry) on edge.

Reyhan had been awaiting trial before his death after being accused of sexually abusing one of his pupils and, with Hanssen due to give evidence about his own abuse by Reyhan when he was a child, Hanssen was aware that all eyes were on him.

As tonight's episode kicked off, Sahira (Laila Rouass) was struggling as she tried to come to terms with both her father's death and the horrific revelation that he had been abusing her own teenage son, Abs.

"That man who died tonight wasn't my father. I'm glad he's dead," she confessed to Hanssen.

It soon became clear that both Sahira and Hanssen were in the frame for killing Reyhan, with both of them seemingly having a motive.

Sahira and Hanssen's friendship was put to the test when Hanssen directly asked Sahira whether she had killed her dad, to which a horrified Sahira replied: "I can't believe you're asking me that."

Despite being told not to leave the hospital, Sahira decided to try to leave with Abs but was prevented from doing so by the arrival of the police. Sahira admitted to Abs that the police suspected that somebody had killed his grandad – prompting Abs to make a devastating confession.

Abs admitted to his mum that he was the one who was responsible for Reyhan's death, explaining that he'd accidentally suffocated him in frustration.

"I just wanted to talk to him, tell him what he did was wrong," he said. "He kept lying, saying that he loved me and I'd got it wrong. I told him to shut up but he wouldn't... I just wanted him to stop."

Abs' devastating confession led Sahira to make a huge decision and she headed off to drop a bombshell on Hanssen.

Repeating Abs' story to Hanssen as if it were her own, she said: "I just wanted quiet. Before I knew it, I'd killed him."

Upset, Hanssen asked Sahira if there was any other way for the situation to end, but she insisted that she needed to be taken to the police. When the police arrived to take Sahira away, Abs begged her not to go but a determined Sahira told him that she loved him and left to face her punishment.

Actress Laila Rouass had confirmed that she would be departing from her role in this week's episode, meaning that Sahira's story seems to be done for now.

It's clear, however, that the ordeal will continue to take a toll on Hanssen, as he was shown to be self-harming as the episode concluded.

Holby City continues next Tuesday (May 11) at 7.50pm on BBC One.
