Hoda Kotb says she wants an 'easy breezy' destination wedding with no 'coordinated bridesmaids'

Hoda Kotb is opening up about her wedding plans with longtime boyfriend Joel Schiffman.

The "Today" co-anchor revealed her engagement on the show Monday. She told the other "Today" hosts – Jenna Bush Hager, Craig Melvin, Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker – that Schiffman had proposed on a beach vacation over the weekend. Her fellow hosts seemed genuinely shocked; Kotb hid the ring from her co-workers until that segment.

Now, the journalist is sharing more thoughts on her and Schiffman's upcoming plans.

“I sort of think we probably want to do it sooner than later, because what are we waiting for? And I kind of think we might do a destination wedding,” she told People. “We may go back to the place we were engaged. We haven’t thought about it too much, but we might do something like that. The place is special to us.”

Hoda Kotb and fiance Joel Schiffman are starting to plan their wedding after getting engaged over the weekend.

She continued, “Nothing we do is about bells and whistles in that way... So it always sort of meant something. Something special to our relationship, in Mexico.”

Kotb added that she just wants the celebration to be "fun and happy."

"I just want everybody to feel easy breezy. No coordinated bridesmaids,” she said. “Come as you are. That’s the theme of the rest of my life.”

The couple, who celebrated six years of dating in June, have two adopted daughters together: Haley Joy, 2, and baby Hope Catherine. Roker dubbed them their "built-in flower girls."

During the show Monday, Guthrie wanted to know what the little ones had to say about the exciting news.

"How are we going to explain? 'Your parents are going to get married'?" Kotb replied with a laugh. "We're still trying to figure out that part of how exactly to explain."
