Historic Winner Crowned on 'Dancing With the Stars'

On Tuesday’s season finale of Dancing With the Stars, Ginger Zee, Paige VanZant, and Nyle DiMarco all awaited the announcement of who would win this season. Ginger Zee was revealed to be at the bottom and out of the running. That left Paige VanZant and Nyle DiMarco. At the end of the show, host Tom Bergeron announced that Nyle DiMarco had won the season. He and his dance partner, Peta Murgatroyd, were hoisted into the air by the other DWTS dancers.

DiMarco is the first deaf winner of Dancing With the Stars. His journey to victory was an inspiring one. DiMarco joined the show to show other deaf people they can do anything they wanted. His partner, Murgatroyd, who had the added challenge of teaching a person who could not hear the music, reflected on the season: “He made me see that Dancing With the Stars is not only about steps. It’s connecting with someone on the dance floor and moving as one. He has been so inspirational to millions of people.”

After his performance, judge Carrie Ann Inaba was so inspired by DiMarco learning to communicate through dance that she took a shot at communicating through sign language. “I said, ‘Thank you for showing us your beautiful heart when you dance,’” she explained.

Throughout the season, DiMarco’s disability turned out to be more of an asset, giving expressive performance each week. One judge commented that he’s been communicating with his body his whole life and dancing was just an extension of that.

With DiMarco’s story, impressive dance skills, and heartwarming personality, it’s no wonder he won the season.
