A historic Mexican restaurant closed after 80 years. Months later, a new owner revived it

La Fonda is back in Yuma.

The historic restaurant closed on Sept. 30 after over 80 years in business. Despite an outpouring of support, the community was saddened to see their beloved restaurant go when the owner decided to close shop to care for her mother who developed dementia.

Martin Ramos, the owner of Mr. Burros, decided to step in and purchase La Fonda.

Ramos told Arizona Family that "it was honor to take up the torch of La Fonda." He went on to explain that he kept all the customer favorites on the menu.

"I had been looking around for the past year for a bigger place, but I never thought this place would come along and here we are trying to fill those big shoes,” he said.

The restaurant soft-opened on Dec. 28.
