Hingham developer: Mixed-use building downtown will 'complement' neighborhood

HINGHAM – Construction of a new mixed-use development at 109 North St. in downtown Hingham is underway. The project will add eight one-bedroom condominiums and 1,800 square feet of retail space to the area, as well as restore the historical Norton House.

The windows, doors and roof have all been installed on the new building, and siding and utility connections will be installed in the next couple of weeks. Plumbing, electrical, heating, air-conditioning and plaster work will  continue through the fall and winter.

“It’s a very attractive building,” developer John Barry, of Scituate, said.

The  project was approved with a special permit that allows for mixed use in the historical district of Hingham Square. Barry is also working to restore the Norton House, a two-building apartment complex at 103 and 105 North St. that sits in front of the new development. The Norton House – built around 1922, according to the Hingham Historical Society – will remain as rental units.

The historical Norton House is being restored by developer John Barry and eight new condominiums are under construction behind the existing building.

Barry and his wife bought the roughly 1-acre lot, including the Norton House and space for the new building, from the Hersey family in 2018 for $1.6 million.

Architecturally, the development will be New England Colonial style with decorative moldings.

“It will be a real  complement to the downtown,” Barry said.

Barry is working with EMBR Architects of Hingham to finalize the design and color palettes for the building, which  has to meet the requirements set by the Historic District Commission.

The expected completion date for the new building is late spring of 2023.
