Hillsdale Boys Tennis receives Academic All-State recognition

HILLSDALE —

The Hillsdale Hornets Boys tennis team finished off their season as one of the top academic teams in the state.

The Hornets, led by head coach Scott Phillips, were selected as one of 21 schools to be named an Academic All-State team by the MHSTeCA. Other schools selected in Division 4 included LCAA rival Brooklyn Columbia Central.

The Division 4 Academic All-State selections are made from teams that average a GPA of 3.25 or higher. Over 90 team certificates were issued this fall. 262 Seniors received Academic All-State certificates.

The Hornets had a cumulative GPA of 3.55. The Hornets players on the Academic All-State team include Kreyzon Philipp, Erick Hecklinger, Andrew Hollister, Same Wiles, Jon Torres, Ben Brock, Charlie Teller, Brohm Gambill, Soren Gambill, Alex Portteus, and Broderick Miller.

Seniors receiving individual Academic All-State honors with a GPA of 3.75 or higher include Jon Torres, Sam Willes, and Kreyzon Philipp.

Several Hornets players capped off their season this fall at regionals. Alex Portteus and Brody Miller competed in doubles. Soren and Brohm Cambill competed in doubles. Ben Brock and Charlie Teller competed in doubles. Jon Torres and Sam Wiles competed in doubles and won the team's only match of the tournament. They defeated Brandywine's Carson Knapp and Sean Tweedy 6-2 and 7-5 to advance to the tournament semifinals against Three Rivers. Three Rivers' double team of Jack Miller and Josh Moore would win the match. Brohm Gambill competed in singles, and would win the first game of a match against Brandywine's Brody Prenkert who would eventually win the match. Andrew Hollister competed in singles. Soren Gambill competed in singles. Kreyzon Philipp competed in singles.

The Hillsdale Hornets Tennis program is run by coach Scott Phillips. The Hornets return to the courts for the LP girls high school Tennis season in the spring. More information on the postseason tournament from 2021 LP boys tennis can be found at mhsaa.com
