Hillary Clinton made a NYFW cameo to honor Oscar de la Renta and sent a powerful political message
Democratic presidential nominee (and forever #girlboss) Hillary Clinton appeared at New York Fashion Week on Thursday, to the surprise and delight of fashion-watchers everywhere, at an event honoring acclaimed designer Oscar de la Renta.
She wasn’t in the front row at a fashion show or caught by a street-style photographer looking chic outside of a venue (though she did look incredibly chic), but at a ceremony celebrating the United States Postal Service’s new stamp collection, which honors the legacy of de la Renta.
In a pink Oscar de la Renta coat and chunky gold coin necklace, Clinton fit right in with the fashion set, hugging Vogue editor Anna Wintour and speaking at Grand Central Terminal before an audience of A-listers, including former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, and designers Diane von Furstenberg and Valentino Garavani.

During her speech celebrating de la Renta, Clinton reminisced about her friendship with the Dominican Republic-born designer before making some pointed remarks about immigration and the unparalleled contributions of immigrants.
“Oscar de la Renta was an immigrant,” she said, according to The New York Times. “And aren’t we proud and grateful that he was?”

Bloomberg also spoke about de la Renta and his foreign-born status, saying, “I hope [the Oscar de la Renta stamps] remind people of the extraordinary contributions immigrants make to our city and our country every single day.”
