Kathy Griffin, Hillary Clinton, and Ilhan Omar join celebrities and political figures in speaking out against the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade.
After news leaked that a majority of the Supreme Court reportedly privately voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, celebrities, political figures, and influential media figures are making backlash to the decision a public affair.
"Not surprising. But still outrageous. This decision is a direct assault on the dignity, rights, & lives of women, not to mention decades of settled law," tweeted former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton after a draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito to strike down the 1973 landmark abortion rights ruling leaked Monday evening via Politico. "It will kill and subjugate women even as a vast majority of Americans think abortion should be legal. What an utter disgrace."

Women's rights are human rights and human rights are women's rights.
An extreme wing of the Supreme Court may seek to deny that fundamental truth.
They may try to force their views on a country where 70% of people want Roe upheld.

Comedian and actress Kathy Griffin — previously investigated by the Secret Service after posing for a photo in 2017 that depicted her holding a fake, decapitated head of President Donald Trump — also tweeted that she'd "love to be posting about the met gala," which also occurred Monday evening with Clinton in attendance, but stressed that the 2016 presidential candidate's presence represented the "only attendee" she cared about.
"President Hillary Clinton never would've let Roe be overturned," she finished.
Roe v Wade has been overturned. Yes I know. Stay in my lane. Well I’d love to be posting about the met gala but this is the only attendee I care about.

House representatives Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also spoke out against the reported vote, which has yet to be widely addressed by the Supreme Court.
"Overturning Roe would put the lives of women across the country at risk. It would fly in the face of decades of precedent and the overwhelming majority of public opinion. And they will not stop here. Expand the court," Omar tweeted.
Ocasio-Cortez cautioned: "As we've warned, SCOTUS isn't just coming for abortion - they're coming for the right to privacy Roe rests on, which includes gay marriage + civil rights. Manchin is blocking Congress codifying Roe. House has seemingly forgotten about Clarence Thomas. These 2 points must change."

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, however, tweeted support for the move, calling it "the most significant and glorious news of our lifetime."
The Supreme Court is preparing to overturn Roe—the most significant and glorious news of our lifetime. Join me in praying to God for the right outcome.

Other famous figures, like social media personality turned businesswoman Michaela Okland, shared personal experience to combat the possible ruling.
"I had an abortion when i was 19 and I've never felt comfortable talking about it online. People have terrifying opinions on the topic and even now I'm scared to speak about it. We talk about destigmatizing a lot of things but we desperately need to destigmatize abortion," Okland tweeted. "With Roe V Wade being overturned we are putting so many young and poor people at risk. The foster-care system will flood even more, children will die of abuse & lack of resources, others will take their own lives. I can't imagine the fear of an unwanted pregnancy with no way out."

Writer and comedian Ashley Nicole Black summarized the sentiment of many criticizing the potential ruling when she tweeted, "There's a particular slap to the face of being told we can vote for abortion rights, by the court that gutted voting rights."

Politico indicated that Republican-appointed Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil M. Gorsuch, Brett M. Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett voted with Samuel A. Alito Jr. to overturn the landmark ruling, against dissenting votes of Justices Stephen G. Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan. Chief Justice John Roberts' stance was not reported. The court's vote comes amid the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization in Mississippi, involving the state's attempt to ban abortions after 15 weeks. A representative for the Supreme Court did not immediately return EW's request to verify the leaked report.

I can’t believe we are here. Book burning, bans on classroom discussions about race and sexuality, the erosion of voter’s rights aimed at the poor and people of color. It’s literally a right wing crack down on democratic norms. The worst are full of passionate intensity.

Forced birth & illegal abortions across state lines is backwards & cruel. The Supreme Court has BECOME the division. Thanks to Alito & his ilk of RW radicals, who are toxic to the Court’s impartiality. Based on his arguments, the Supreme Court is strictly political now. https://t.co/0PTmxcVovG

An extremist Supreme Court is poised to overturn #RoeVWade and impose its far-right, unpopular views on the entire country. It's time for the millions who support the Constitution and abortion rights to stand up and make their voices heard. We're not going back—not ever.
— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) May 3, 2022
Abolish the filibuster. Codify Roe. Expand the Supreme Court. Protect abortion rights by any means necessary.
We need all of the above. This is an emergency.— Cori Bush (@CoriBush) May 3, 2022
Folks on here saying this will energize “women” voters are blatantly ignoring that majority of Black, Latina, Asian and Indigenous women voted against Republicans, and majority of white women voted for despite Rs explicit promise to end Roe. So, what are you really saying?
— Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) May 3, 2022
Those motherf*****s really did it. First they came for Black voters, then they targeted LGBTQ+ families. Now, women of America, they’re overruling Roe v. Wade.
We have to unite and strike back. Take to the streets. Overwhelm them at the ballot box. They have gone too damn far.— George Takei (@GeorgeTakei) May 3, 2022
Health care decisions should be between a woman and her doctor, not Ted Cruz.
— Amy Klobuchar (@amyklobuchar) May 3, 2022
I was shocked to wake up to the news this morning. A reversal of Roe v. Wade would set us back 50 years and disproportionately impact the most vulnerable women in society.
I support a woman's right to make their own decisions about their health care.— Bill Gates (@BillGates) May 3, 2022

Speculation swirls tonight about overturning Roe based on alleged SC leaks. If true, it should be no surprise considering this Court. But shocking nonetheless. Women, especially the most vulnerable and marginalized, will bear the heaviest burden. Will it spur fury or apathy?
— Dan Rather (@DanRather) May 3, 2022
Congress must pass legislation that codifies Roe v. Wade as the law of the land in this country NOW. And if there aren’t 60 votes in the Senate to do it, and there are not, we must end the filibuster to pass it with 50 votes.
— Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) May 3, 2022
Someone may have put a lot on the line to warn you of this. It doesn't matter who they are or why they did it: their role is complete.
What matters now is how you respond.https://t.co/odTxqdD1Si— Edward Snowden (@Snowden) May 3, 2022
We know this #SCOTUS won’t stop at Roe.
Rest up. We have a lot of work to do.— Chasten Buttigieg (@Chasten) May 3, 2022
I don’t have to like Roe v Wade to accept it and want some common sense restrictions. You don’t have to like DC vs Heller to accept it and want some common sense restrictions. But we all have to accept SCOTUS being the law of the land for this all to work. Otherwise it’s anarchy.
