High School Teacher Allegedly Shot His Wife, Brother-in-Law at Wedding

Cody Wiggins, 29, allegedly shot his family members before fleeing the scene on foot, say authorities

A Florida high school teacher was arrested on Saturday for allegedly shooting his wife and brother-in-law at a wedding in Tennessee, authorities said.

Cody Wiggins, 29, has been charged with two counts of attempted homicide, one count of aggravated assault, one count of domestic assault, and one count of tampering with evidence, according to WEAR-TV, WSMV 4 and the Pensacola News Journal.

The alleged incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night at a Marriott hotel in Cool Springs, according to a news release from the City of Franklin. Franklin police officers responded to an active shooter call at the venue, and when they arrived, they began rendering aid to two victims.

The shooter — who police said used a semi-automatic handgun — had fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended in a nearby subdivision. The release stated that the suspect, who they allege is Wiggins, is the husband and brother-in-law of the two victims.

The family members were in Franklin attending a wedding at the time of the incident. Authorities have not released a possible motive for the shooting.

The two victims were transported by ambulance to Vanderbilt Hospital. No update about their condition had been released as of Wednesday.

Wiggins is currently being held in the Williamson County Jail on $3.5 million bond, per WEAR-TV. It's not immediately clear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney.

Prior to his arrest, Wiggins worked as an English teacher at West Florida High School in Pensacola, according to Escambia County Public Schools' website.

In a statement to the Pensacola News Journal, Escambia Schools Superintendent Keith Leonard said, "In compliance with Florida law and the Escambia County School District's contractual provisions, the employee will be immediately suspended."

"We will continue to work with law enforcement as the case is brought to a culmination," Leonard added.
