High School Senior, 17, Dies After Being Struck by School Bus While on Bike: Police

The 78-year-old school bus driver "swerved" to try and avoid hitting the student, identified as Sherman Vannoy, according to Florida Highway Patrol

A 17-year-old Florida high school senior died Monday morning after he was struck by a school bus while on a bicycle near the school's entrance.

The crash took place at about 6:50 a.m. when the Lake County school bus collided with the victim at North Hancock Road and Fox Trail Avenue near Minneola, the Florida Highway Patrol said in an accident report obtained by PEOPLE.

The victim, identified by Lake County Schools as Sherman Vannoy, was approaching the stop sign at the intersection and entered the marked crosswalk, according to FHP.

That's when the 78-year-old driver attempted to make a left turn to enter Lake Minneola High School and "swerved" to try and avoid Sherman. The agency said the front of the bus collided with the victim and continued off the roadway before striking a stop sign and a chain-link fence.

Sherman was taken to South Lake Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, troopers said. The bus driver was uninjured and remained at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

Lake County Schools Communications Coordinator Sherri Owens said the bus driver, who was hired in November 2021, was "distraught" by the accident, CBS affiliate WKMG-TV reported. She has since been placed on administrative leave, according to NBC affiliate WESH-TV.

The school district did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Lake County Schools Spokesperson Sheri Williams said in a statement that it was "a very difficult day for all of us" at the school district, per The Clermont News-Leader.

"Sherman Vannoy, a 17-year-old male senior at Lake Minneola High School, passed away from his injuries," her statement added. "We are in touch with the family and are offering our support. We have grief counselors on campus this week for any students or faculty members who may need their services."

Though Sherman was not a part of the high school's football team, he was honored at a game Monday night with a moment of silence, WESH-TV and WKMG-TV reported. Additionally, fans on both sides wore his favorite color: orange.

A GoFundMe campaign seeking donations for Sherman's family urged people to "help with the unexpected costs of what comes after a tragedy."

More than $2,300 has been raised as of Tuesday afternoon.
