High school hoops: BJ Walker scores 40 for Chix; Zeeland West tops Unity

ALLENDALE - B.J. Walker is having a record-setting sophomore season.

The Zeeland East forward set the school record for points in a game with 40 on Thursday night in a 73-57 win over Allendale.

The reason Walker knew it was the school record is because he held the previous mark of 36. He scored 36 in a win over Whitehall on Dec. 28. It is considered a school record since Zeeland East and Zeeland West split. So there have been higher scoring games. Jay Riemersma scored 49 points in 1991.

The Chix end the regular season with a 10-12 record. They play Jenison in the first round of districts on Monday, March 6.

Layne Risdon added 13 points and Trevor Raade scored 9.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Zeeland West 62, Unity Christian 57

The Zeeland West boys basketball team beat Hudsonville Unity Christian at on Thursday night 62-57 on the road.

"I was really proud of our guys tonight. We were able to get a lead early and withstand a number of runs by Unity throughout the night," Zeeland West coach David Klyn said. "Our guys made some big plays in the fourth and this gives us momentum going into the tournament."

Merritt Alderink led the Dux with 24 points. Luke Bakker had 10 points, while Deklen Klamt and Myles Steffen each added eight.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Watervliet 65, Saugatuck 38

The Trailblazers closed out the regular season with their toughest opponent in Watervliet. The Panthers are a top-five team in the state and they played like it, handing the Trailblazers a big loss by a score of 65-38.

Saugatuck was down 21-2 after the first quarter. Watervliet was able to coast on that lead the rest of the way.

Leading the way for the Trailblazers was senior Will Ayers with 11 points. Sophomore Carter Miller chipped in seven points.

Zion Christian 62, Black River 56

The Black River boys lost to Zion Christian on Thursday night 56-62 and finished the season 8-14.

Jonah VanderMeer lead the River Rats with 19 points and five assists. Kai Norman chipped in 14 points and four rebounds.

"Tonight was not the way I wanted to finish the season off. We were up 12 point in the first half and let things slip away," Black River coach Darrion Denham said. "We got too happy when we made a great rotation or hit a big shot and seemed to lose focus on our game plan. I preach to my guys day in and day out to understand we got to keep our emotions balanced out for 32 minutes. Tonight was a learning experience for us and we will be ready for the postseason."
