A High School Is Combating Vaping By Removing Doors From Bathroom Stalls

A Growing Issue

Vaping is becoming increasingly common among teenagers, with the new method of smoking not only increasing the likelihood that they will start smoking traditional cigarettes but also creating new vaping related lung illnesses.

An Unconventional Response

Wilson High School in Florence, Alabama, is taking an extreme method of combatting student vaping by removing the doors in the bathroom stalls of the boys' bathrooms. After a student passed out after sneaking into the bathroom to vape, the school decided to take extreme action.

Principal Gary Horton explained that so many students were sneaking smoke breaks in the bathroom that it felt like the most effective option.

This Is Not The Right Response

Parents however are not onboard with this plan. They told KOLD:

“Me, as a parent, personally, I think that’s a little excessive,” said Brandon Campbell.

“I don’t like it. They take their only private place in the school that they can do their business,” said Rachel Munsey.

“Bad vaping problem, then you need spotters in the bathroom. You need someone adult to go in there to make sure there’s not any vaping going on," said Munsey.

“It’s a little over-excessive. Maybe they need to put a monitor in the hall, like they do. Usually they have a truancy officer or a police officer at the school. Have them monitor the hallway because a bathroom is for each individual person’s privacy," said Campbell.

Horton explained that the door removal could be a temporary fix until a more effective longterm solution is found.
