HGTV Home Improvement Expert Drew Scott Picks Windsor Square Fixer Upper
Canadian real estate broker and longtime HGTV star Drew Scott, along with his twin brother Jonathan Scott the co-host of the popular series “Property Brothers” and currently a contestant on the 25th season of “Dancing With the Stars,” shelled out $2.3 million for a major fixer-upper in the heart of L.A.’s historic and historically affluent Windsor Square between the tony Hancock Park and rapidly gentrifying Koreatown neighborhoods. Listing agent Bruce Walker of Rodeo Realty says the occasional actor and entrepreneur and his fiancée, Linda Phan, plan to live in the house once they finish a soup-to-nuts gut-renovation that’s already underway and will be featured on the upcoming HGTV program “Property Brothers at Home: Drew’s Honeymoon House.”
At the time of the telegenic home improvement expert’s purchase, the 3,500-square-foot, near century old residence was woefully worse for the wear but still retained a variety of dignified architectural details such as original moldings and hardwood floors, loads of built-ins and a Batchelder tile fireplace in the living room. In addition to a classic center hall entry flanked by formal living and dining rooms, the existing floor plan offered a den with French doors that opened to a ticky-tacky, sky light topped covered patio along with a huge butler’s pantry and small, ramshackle kitchen complete with vintage range.
Floor plans included with marketing materials indicate there were four spacious bedrooms and two antiquated bathrooms on the second floor plus a staff bedroom and bathroom squirreled away off a huge laundry porch behind the kitchen on the main floor. An additional 1,000-square-feet of living space was available in a warren of rooms tucked up into the third floor attic with wood floors and steeply pitched vaulted ceilings.
Like the house, the backyard was shabbily maintained and in desperate need of a complete overhaul but benefitted from a handful of mature shade trees and plenty of space to add a swimming pool and spa.
The Scott brothers, who wrote a 2016 best-selling book titled “Dream Home: The Property Brothers’ Ultimate Guide to Finding & Fixing Your Perfect House,” continue to co-own a home in Las Vegas, Nev., they bought in 2011 for $400,500 and transformed for their TV viewing audiences from a bland tract house into an adult playground with a resort-style backyard jam-packed with a huge swimming pool with curlicue two-story water slide and swim up bar, a retractable movie screen in front of a sunken lounge area, an al fresco dining terrace with built-in grilling station and TV-surmounted outdoor fireplace, a putting green, a Zen-inspired rock garden and a half-court basketball court.
