The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards gave us our first true surprises of this year’s awards season. Since it is the first major kudos with five-nominee slots in each category, there was a number of snubs in the acting categories, one of whom was Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall,” in a sea of exclusions that included Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Rosamund Pike (“Saltburn”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), and the trio of actors from “May December”: Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton.

But fear not, they all still have hope yet for receiving recognition from the academy, particularly Hüller, who is the only performance from an international film in the bunch. She plays Sandra Voyter in Justine Triet‘s award-winning film, a woman who tries to prove her innocence after a mysterious death at her home. To date, Hüller has received bids at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, and she prevailed with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, National Society of Film Critics and New York Film Critics Online, among others.

Recent statistics have shown that for the past five years, 28 actors have gone on to be nominated at the Oscars without getting recognized at the SAG Awards. That averages to almost six actors every year. Below are the list of performers who achieved that feat since 2018.

2022: Paul Mescal (Best Actor, “Aftersun”), Michelle Williams (Best Actress, “The Fabelmans”), Andrea Riseborough (Best Actress, “To Leslie”), Brian Tyree Henry (Best Supporting Actor, “Causeway”), Judd Hirsch (Best Supporting Actor, “The Fabelmans”)

2021: Penelope Cruz (Best Actress, “Parallel Mothers”), Kristen Stewart (Best Actress, “Spencer”), Ciaran Hinds (Best Supporting Actor, “Belfast”), Jesse Plemons (Best Supporting Actor, “The Power of the Dog”), J.K. Simmons (Best Supporting Actor, “Being the Ricardos”), Jessie Buckley (Best Supporting Actress, “The Lost Daughter”), Judi Dench (Best Supporting Actress, “Belfast”), Aunjuane Ellis (Best Supporting Actress, “King Richard”)

2020: Andra Day (Best Actress, “The United States vs. Billie Holiday”), Paul Raci (Best Supporting Actor, “Sound of Metal”), LaKeith Stanfield (Best Supporting Actor, “Judas and the Black Messiah”), Amanda Seyfried (Best Supporting Actress, “Mank”)

2019: Antonio Banderas (Best Actor, “Pain and Glory”), Jonathan Pryce (Best Actor, “The Two Popes”), Saoirse Ronan (Best Actress, “Little Women”), Anthony Hopkins (Best Supporting Actor, “The Two Popes”), Kathy Bates (Best Supporting Actress, “Richard Jewell”), Florence Pugh (Best Supporting Actress, “Little Women”)

2018: Willem Dafoe (Best Actor, “At Eternity’s Gate”), Yalitza Aparicio (Best Actress, “Roma”), Sam Rockwell (Best Supporting Actor, “Vice”), Regina King (Best Supporting Actress, “If Beale Street Could Talk”), Marina De Tavira (Best Supporting Actress, “Roma”)

So there is a tentative certainty that a number of these actors will return, pending the BAFTA nominations coming January 18, where all of these 2023 performers are longlisted (except Portman and Melton). Based on the previous years, there’s also the possibility of some newcomers starting their run at BAFTA (Plemons and Buckley) and going on to receive the Oscar nom, or just surprising on nominations morning without getting any of the precursors (Riseborough, Cruz, Dench, Stanfield, De Tavira). That could happen particularly in the supporting categories, where the nominees have been very scattered with these SAG finalists, and Hüller could break in there for another foreign-language film, “The Zone of Interest.”

What makes Hüller stand out is that unlike the other actors, many predicted her to miss at the SAG Awards since the guild has a history of not nominating performances from international films, so she is perhaps the safest bet that could afford to be left out. And among the 28 actors listed that were snubbed by SAG, four are from non-English language films: Cruz, Banderas, Aparacio and De Tavira.

As for the others, DiCaprio, Ruffalo and Lee also seem likely to not be too affected, though we should definitely be careful not to overestimate their odds, particularly with the men since their other co-stars made it in. The rest would definitely need the British push as their films are not contenders for Best Picture at the Oscars, with the exception of Ferrara, who may suffer from a lack of screen time in “Barbie.” What also works in Hüller’s favor is that “Anatomy of a Fall” is anticipated to regain its momentum at BAFTA, having that European appeal that they tend to go for with their nominating juried system, something that also could help Scott and Pike with their movies. It will be exciting to see how the rest of this awards season shapes up.
