Here's where to find some of the best holiday lighting displays around Topeka this month

Holiday lights sure to please restless children and nostalgic adults have popped up around Topeka this year. Even the Grinches and Scrooges will catch that Christmas spirit.

The lights include a mobile light show.

Topekans are likely to experience a moment of déjà vu as they are out and about this season. A key moment in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” featuring a car with a huge tree strapped atop, has been brought to life.

The tree has huge roots and 12,000 lights surrounding it. Its owner, Jordan Larkin, enjoys making eyebrows raise and mouths drop around town.

Jordan Larkin uses his station wagon to pay tribute to “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation." The car was featured Dec. 2 in the Miracle on Kansas Avenue parade.

Larkin, who grew up watching the beloved movie, was inspired by his own station wagon, which resembles the one in the movie.

“It's a new tradition,” Larkin said. “We're going to always have a lit-up tree on top now.”

The tree comes from his parents’ farm in Berryton.

“We’ve got a loader out there,” he said. “We just pull it right on the ground.”

Larkin’s children don’t mind being seen with their dad when they are out and about.

“They love whenever I am off work in time to be able to go pick them up from school,” he said.

A complex system makes the lights work.

“I've got a solar panel in there, and then the solar panel is hooked up to a marine battery,” he said. “Then, attached to the battery, is a power inverter.”

Soldier runs Evans Christmas Lights to benefit military families

A more traditional light show, Evans Christmas Lights, is run by Shawn Evans, a full-time soldier for the Kansas Army National Guard. He uses the show as a fundraiser to benefit families of deployed military. The items are delivered to a food pantry located at Forbes Field.

A trash can encircled by lights serves as Evans’ donation box. Visitors can bring such nonperishable items as canned goods, diapers or money.

Evans has been decorating his home since he moved to the Southboro subdivision, which is known for its displays.

"It’s a really pretty neighborhood to drive through,” he said. “I just have a few more lights than some people.”

Evans, who acts as a consultant for Topeka Zoo Lights, now has a home that is the center of attention.

“I enjoy the joy that it brings to, not only my neighborhood, but people of all ages,” he said.

Evans plans to serve bags of popcorn to those who drive or walk by his home on Dec. 16.
