Here's what you need to know before watching 'SIX The Musical' in Austin this week

A queendom unlike any other is reigning in Austin this week with the arrival of "SIX The Musical."

The hit show is making its Bass Concert Hall debut this Wednesday through Sunday with two performances each on the weekend. Audiences will experience the lives and history of King Henry VII's six wives like never before: through a pop show contest extravaganza.

Here's what you need to know before watching this week:

Not your typical musical

"SIX" is in a league of its own when it comes to performance type. With no intermission, the show is very similar to a concert with a beautiful but fairly minimal stage setup and all actresses on stage the entire time.

Characters also speak directly to the audience and encourage cheering as they personally address the city of Austin.

It's not history, but her-story

This musical is all about girl power, evident in both its cast of characters and live band. The all-female band, just like the actresses, stays on stage for the entire performance. They're called the ladies in waiting, and they consist of a keyboardist, bass player, guitarist and drummer.

Drawing inspiration from today's stars

Since this is a pop show musical with modern influences, each queen of "SIX" has what's called queenspiration: the singers of today who informed their sound.

Catherine of Aragon, played by Gerianne Pérez, draws upon Beyoncé and Shakira for her performance. Anne Boleyn, played by Zan Berube, takes inspiration from Lily Allen and Avril Lavigne.

Amina Faye's Jane Seymour looks to Adele and Sia, Terica Marie's Anna of Cleves embodies Nicki Minaj and Rihanna, Aline Mayagoitia's Katherine Howard channels Britney Spears and Ariana Grande and Sydney Parra's Catherine Parr reflects Alicia Keys and Emeli Sandé.

A Texas connection

Aline Mayagoitia, who plays fifth wife Katherine Howard, spent much of her life in Austin after moving from Mexico City. She grew up watching plays and musicals at Bass Concert Hall, and now she gets to take the stage herself.
