A musical about the man who invented the printing press.

A world premiere that takes you into a braiding shop in Harlem.

A revival of the Stephen Sondheim show that was a bomb when it opened 40 years ago.

The list of Broadway shows opening this fall may be smaller than usual, but they certainly grab attention. One of the highlights is "Harmony," with music by Barry Manilow, book and lyrics by Bruce Sussman. Directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle, the show was a big hit last year at the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

There will be plenty of star power on stage, with Daniel Radcliffe in Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along"; Leslie Odom in "Purlie Victorious"; Danny DeVito in "I Need That"; and Melissa Etheridge sharing stories and songs at Circle in the Square.

Broadway had a decent season in 2022-23, welcoming about 12.3 million theatergoers and taking in about $1.6 billion, according to The Broadway League. That's still below the pre-pandemic 2018-2019 season, when about 14.8 million people saw a show, taking in $1.8 billion.

This summer, the big show that opened was "Back to the Future — The Musical." As I write this, it's playing at 99 percent capacity (Great Scott!). If you love the movie, you'll love the musical. It's fun and full of cool effects that will make you think you're a part of a video game or amusement park ride.

Here's a look at the shows opening this fall on Broadway:

Merrily We Roll Along

"It started out like a song ... " This Stephen Sondheim musical was a bomb when it opened in 1981, closing after 16 performances and 52 previews. But it's become more and more beloved. The hook? The show is told in reverse chronological order. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, this production was a hot ticket last season off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop. Directed by Maria Friedman, this is the first Broadway revival of "Merrily." Previews begin Tuesday, Sept. 19, closes Sunday, March 24, 2024, Hudson Theatre, 141 W. 44th St. Tickets range from $107 to $499; 855-801-5876, merrilyonbroadway.com.

I Need That

Sam (Danny DeVito) doesn’t get out much, opting instead for the safety of his house in the company of his (many, many) things. But when a notice from the government arrives alerting Sam that he must clean up his property or face eviction, he’s forced to reckon with what’s trash and what’s treasure. DeVito, who was born in Neptune and raised in Asbury Park, returns to Roundabout Theatre Company starring alongside his daughter, Lucy DeVito, and Ray Anthony Thomas in this comedy from Theresa Rebeck. Previews begin Friday, Oct. 13, opens Thursday, Nov. 2, closes Saturday, Dec. 23, American Airlines Theatre, 227 W. 42nd St. Tickets range from $69 to $279; 212-719-1300, roundabouttheatre.org.

How did they go from the subways of Berlin to superstardom to oblivion? Previews begin Wednesday, Oct. 18, opens Monday, Nov. 13, Ethel Barrymore Theatre, 243 W. 47th St. Tickets range from $74 to $294; 212-239-6200, harmonyanewmusical.com.
