Her Singing Debut! Chrissy Metz Wows During ACM Awards Performance with Carrie Underwood

Jack Pearson would be so proud!

This Is Us star Chrissy Metz made her live television singing debut on Sunday at the ACM Awards in Las Vegas. The actress premiered her song “I’m Standing with You” from her upcoming movie Breakthrough and was joined onstage by country stars Carrie Underwood, Lauren Alaina, Mickey Guyton and Maddie & Tae.

Metz took the stage first in a navy blue gown before she was joined by her fellow singers. Together they raised their voices to the rafters, belting out the song’s emotional lyrics.

Metz opened up to PEOPLE on the red carpet pre-show ahead of the ACMs.

“I’m excited. I mean, you know, as a little girl, you always dream about something like this. But to actually do it and to hold a stage with these incredible women — Lauren Alaina, Carrie Underwood, Maddie + Tae, Mickey Guyton. Are you kidding?” she says. “It’s really exciting.”

Metz, 38, has been very open about her love of country music, even serving as a presenter at last year’s 2018 CMT Music Awards.

“Here’s the thing. I just ran into Tanya Tucker. I was like, she literally kissed my hand — I have her lip gloss on my hand, folks. I really do love all of these acts and all of these artists,” Metz added on the ACMs red carpet. “I got to see George Strait and Miranda Lambert sing one of my favorite George Strait songs at rehearsal. I was like, losing my mind. Everyone here is just incredible. I love country music.”

While some fans and audiences were surprised by her singing talents, This Is Us fans already have seen the Emmy nominee channel her vocal abilities as her character, Kate, a one-time Adele impersonator and aspiring singer.

During the second season, Metz showcased her real singing voice when she sang Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 classic “Landslide.” (Metz herself even auditioned for American Idol in 2007!)

The upcoming film Breakthrough is based on author Joyce Smith’s real-life story and her 2017 memoir, The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection, about how her son fell through the ice of a Missouri lake and was given a bleak prognosis for survival.

Costarring with Metz are actors Josh Lucas, Topher Grace (BlacKkKlansman) and Mike Colter (Luke Cage).
