Speaking during the New York City premiere of the Enola Holmes sequel, Cavill spoke about the return, calling it “an emotional moment” in a way and just how much the character of Superman meant to him.

“Yes, to a degree, it is an emotional moment,” said Cavill. “That character means a lot to me and the character’s been a formative part of my career, so getting to wear the suit again for that cameo especially was a powerful moment. It meant that hope was not in vain. I proved the theory right, so we’ll see where we go from here.”

Cavill was also asked about why it took so long for the character to reprise his role but he’d much rather focus on what the future holds for the character rather than the past.

“There’s lots that goes into that, there’s not just one thing,” Cavill said. “I could talk about it for days, but let’s look about the future now. The future’s what matters and bringing hope, optimism, and joy to the character.”

Fans were excited to see Cavill show up after the animated credits of Black Adam, where he appears before Dwayne Johnson’s titular character at the behest of Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller. Johnson has spoken repeatedly about his desire to see the two titans battle, which now seems to be more of a possibility than ever.

Cavill previously appeared as Superman/Clark Kent in 2013’s Man of Steel, 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2017’s Justice League, and 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Given the amount of time that has passed since Justice League, fans were uncertain as to whether Cavill was still set to play the Man of Steel, making this announcement a welcome surprise for DCEU fans.
