Hellboy meets a new monster in Winter Special comic preview
The holidays may be over, but winter is still here — and what better way to while away these dark nights than with ghost stories? Luckily, this year’s Hellboy Winter Special comes packed with three new ones.
Hellboy creator Mike Mignola writes the first story in the issue, titled “The Miser’s Gift” and illustrated by Mark Laszlo. It’s the only tale in the comic that features an actual appearance from Hellboy. “The Longest Night,” written by Chris Roberson and illustrated by Leila del Luca, instead focuses on 19th-century paranormal investigator Sarah Jewell (an old friend of Sir Edward Grey, a recurring character in the Hellboy mythos whom Roberson has written about in the Witchfinder comics), while “The Beast of Ingleheim,” written by Scott Allie and illustrated by Andrea Mutti, catches up with the Knights of St. Hagan
A Christmas Carol is a favorite touchstone of Mignola’s; the exchange between Scrooge and Marley was quoted extensively during Hellboy in Hell. “The Miser’s Gift” is also a bit of an homage to Charles Dickens’ classic story. Hellboy meets a man who, wandering home at night through the wintry streets, crossed over into a ghost street, left over from an older incarnation of the city. There, true to the spirit of A Christmas Carol, he meets a very mysterious miser and learns an important lesson about the power of giving.
