Heidi Montag: ‘I Felt Like the Frumpy Roommate’ on ‘The Hills’

Heidi Montag is getting candid about her days on The Hills and her decision to undergo plastic surgery, a decision that caused her mom, Darlene Egelhoff, to cut off communication with her for two years. Now they are starring on a Lifetime reality show, The Mother/Daughter Experiment, where they are working to mend their broken relationship.

“When Heidi left Colorado when she was 17 years old and went off to college in San Francisco, she was the most confident, happy… just absolutely loved herself,” Egelhoff explained to The Insider With Yahoo. “She was not impressionable and impacted by what others thought of her.”

That all changed in 2006 when Montag was cast in MTV’s spinoff of the hit reality series, Laguna Beach. “I think that I was so self-involved at the time that I just wanted to look perfect and I was very competitive with other people in the industry and in my show, and I was very criticized as well,” Heidi revealed. “It was the beginning of cyberbullying and I really took it to heart.”

Heidi soon began comparing herself to her castmates. “I just felt like the frumpy roommate, and Audrina was the more glamorous, sexy one, and Whitney was the glamorous fashionista, and Lauren was Lauren and glorified in her show, and I was kind of the leftover one,” she said. “I think that a lot of people felt that or said that as well.”

Things came to a head for Darlene and Heidi after cameras filmed her mom’s reaction to seeing her daughter’s shocking post-surgery results. “I was very defensive at the time and I felt hurt through it because the way it was on camera,” Heidi noted. “I just wanted to have those conversations off camera.”

The 29-year-old TV personality and her mom are in a good place today. Darlene has even learned to love Heidi’s husband, Spencer Pratt. Check out the video to hear what she had to say about Spencer, and tune in to The Insider With Yahoo on TV tonight for the latest in entertainment news.
