Heidi and Marc D'Amelio Admit Her Time on 'DWTS' Caused a 'Huge Shift' in Their Marriage for the Worse (Exclusive)

"I wish I would have been more supportive throughout the process, because I know how important it was for you," Marc said, adding that he understood that Heidi "wanted her career"

Heidi and Marc D’Amelio are still reeling from the aftermath of her time on Dancing with the Stars.

In a clip of Wednesday’s episode of The D’Amelio Show, shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Heidi and Marc came to terms with the rough patch they’re experiencing in their marriage.

While having dinner and drinks, the mom of two began opening up about how her appearance on the competitive reality show has affected the way they spend time together and how their date nights could “keep building on like the good foundation we have.”

“I wish I would have been more supportive throughout the process, because I know how important it was for you,” Marc confesses, as Heidi grasps his hands.

In a confessional interview, the D’Amelio family patriarch reveals that “Dancing with the Stars, for me, just created this huge shift in our family which I wasn't prepared for.”

“If I would have known what I know now, that like ‘dude, she wants her career,’” he continues, noting that Heidi probably wanted to do “exactly what I've been doing over the last 20 years” and “start a business.”

Marc adds that when he pursued his career, he did “all these things” for himself and Heidi probably wanted to “do that for herself.”

“And now looking at it, I'm like, ‘Dude you just probably should have backed off a little bit and chilled and not burned the house down,’” he says.

Heidi and her daughter Charli D’Amelio competed side-by-side on season 31 of Dancing with the Stars. They were the first mother-daughter pair ever to take on the challenge.

"I was in shock," Heidi told Michael Strahan during a Sept. 2022 appearance on Good Morning America.

"I didn't think they were being real, I thought it was a prank," Charli said at the time. "But when they were like, ' No, this is real,' I was so excited for the both of us, especially to do this together!"

In an interview with PEOPLE ahead of their season, Charli explained, "I think I've never really competed against my mom in anything. We are not a competitive family with each other, but we are competitive with other things and for me, especially dance. So I think we're both excited and happy for each other, but there's definitely that little bit of competition that will happen throughout this season."

"I think we're going into it both of us, going to do our best," Heidi added. "We're not going to hold back. We're going to do everything that we can to learn and grow and learn all the dances and perform. So I would do that either way and I think she would too."

Charli and her partner, Mark Ballas, became the season 31 champions. Meanwhile, Heidi and her partner, Artem Chigvintsev, ended the show in eighth place.
