Heidi Klum's Unique Perspective About the Victoria's Secret Fashion Shows Might Upset Other Angels

During the height of her supermodel era, Heidi Klum spent 11 years as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, and she loved every minute of it. The 50-year-old fashion icon might have a differing opinion from other former Angels, though, as the company has come under scrutiny in the last few years over claims of misogyny, body-shaming, and lack of diversity.

Klum, on the other hand, has nothing but praise for the company. “This was a really big time in my life,” Klum said in the most recent episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast. “It was amazing. I loved it.” She has a hard time believing that viewers of the once-successful fashion show would object to it, and she finds it “so strange” that some of her peers didn’t enjoy the runway experience.  “Looking at the documentary, I saw one person, who I walked with during those years, say they felt really uncomfortable. It’s just so strange,” Klum explained, referencing the Hulu docuseries, Victoria’s Secret Angels and Demons, which examined the problematic company, including its longtime CEO Les Wexner’s ties to the late sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.

Klum’s next comments are what might get her into a bit of hot water because she seems to unintentionally shame other models for reframing their time as a Victoria’s Secret Angel. “If you felt uncomfortable, why are you doing it?” she questioned. “I loved it always. I always wanted to wear the big wings. … It was fun.” What Klum needs to remember is that not all experiences are alike. Even though she has good memories of her time with the lingerie company, it’s no secret that she was the top dog at the fashion show after Martin Izquierdo, the designer of those epic angel wings, admitted in the documentary that “Heidi always wanted the biggest wings in the history of the show.”

Tyra Banks revealed that her time with the company was a struggle because her curvier body didn’t want to whittle down to dangerous weight levels. She shocked viewers in the series with the claim that Victoria’s Secret pressured her at “123 pounds to lose 10 pounds and to go to 113… because I was so curvy, and they were like ‘that’s just too much.’” Let’s just remember, Banks is 5’10” tall! But the models did as they were told because it was considered one of the top jobs in the fashion industry at the time, drawing the likes of Gisele Bündchen, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Bella Hadid on its runway.

Victoria’s Secret has attempted a comeback and a rebrand over the past few years, introducing campaigns featuring soccer champ Megan Rapinoe and actress Priyanka Chopra, but the company has never regained its foothold in the pop-culture landscape.
