Heidi Klum shares a behind-the-scenes look at her 2023 Halloween costume

Heidi Klum ruffled plenty of feathers on Oct. 31 after arriving at her annual Halloween party in a head-to-toe peacock costume — and now she’s giving fans a literal behind-the-scenes glimpse at how she prepared the look.

On Wednesday a fan asked the supermodel — and Queen of Halloween — if she had any funny moments to share from her getting-ready process, as a part of a Q&A on Klum's Instagram Story.

Klum, 50, replied with a photo of her posing with her back and butt to the camera, wearing what looked like a sheer nude-colored unitard with blue rhinestones, long fringe on the sleeves and a scooped back so low it exposed her cheeky panties underneath.

It’s unclear whether the undergarment pictured was actually a part of her official costume, which featured a cobalt blue bodysuit without tassels, or if it was just a test run.

However, the photo proved that Klum is always willing to go the extra mile when it comes to her artistic disguises.

Klum also turned her red carpet appearance into a full-on performance. The America’s Got Talent judge partnered with a crew of Cirque du Soleil acrobats, who camouflaged themselves as peacock feathers and helped the star transform into a large bird. (Her husband, Tom Kaulitz, walked the carpet as an egg.)

“I wanted to do a costume with many, many people. I wanted to have a bunch of people and we all become one thing. And for me, in my mind, that one thing was the peacock,” Klum, who also sported a prosthetic beak, told PEOPLE of her inspiration.

She added that she flew to Montreal to figure out how to stack everyone. “My feet are a different pattern so my feet melt into his legs,” she shared, explaining how their placement was important for the hues of her costume.

Coming up with and executing such a grand ensemble doesn’t happen overnight. The former Project Runway host told PEOPLE that it took an entire year to put together.

And though her getups vary in theme — and scare factor — every year, Klum always conceptualizes her next big idea the morning after her Halloween bash, which has been ongoing since her first in 2000.
