Heavy Song of the Week is a feature on Heavy Consequence breaking down the top metal and hard rock tracks you need to hear every Friday. This week, the top song goes to the Cavalera brothers’ re-recording of Sepultura’s “Escape to the Void.”

Re-recorded albums tend to be redundant or an obvious cash grab, but brothers Max and Iggor Cavalera’s re-do’s of the early Sepultura albums are an exception to the rule.

The original LPs had low-budget productions, to say the least, making these new versions more like modern re-imaginings (think TV/film/video game reboots), as heard on “Escape to the Void” from the upcoming re-recording of Schizophrenia.

Everything is just heavier and clearer, from Iggor’s ferocious pounding to Max’s breakneck thrash riffage and raspy howls. If you catch the brothers in concert in 2024, this is what it would sound like. Direct, no frills, and particularly entertaining if you’re already familiar with the original version on Schizophrenia.

Honorable Mentions:

Deep Purple – “Portable Door”

Five decades into their legendary career, Deep Purple are still dishing out propulsive hard rock jams. Don Airey’s organ is at the heart of their latest single “Portable Door,” hot in the mix and sure to trigger a jolt of nostalgia in longtime fans of the UK outfit.

Redd Kross – “Candy Coloured Catastrophe”

Of all the power-pop bands that rose to prominence in the ’90s, Redd Kross were among the heaviest, perhaps a result of their punk roots. “Candy Coloured Catastrophe” is a prime example of their ability to marry grunged and garaged-out chords with Lennon-esque melodies, an utterly delectable combo.

Unto Others – “Butterfly”

Goth metal purveyors Unto Others survived the often fateful act of having to change their band name (they were originally called Idle Hands). It’s a testament to the strength of their post-Type O Negative brand of heavy metal — romantic, catchy, and self-aware. “Butterfly” is an earworm and an apt choice for Unto Others’ first single of 2024.
