'Heartbreaking' Seattle Bus Crash Kills 1 Pedestrian, Injures 12 Others

The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the city's Belltown neighborhood, authorities said

The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is investigating a deadly accident involving a bus and another vehicle, which killed one pedestrian and injured 12 others.

According to a news release shared by SPD's Det. Judinna Gulpan, first responders arrived at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Battery Street in the city’s Belltown neighborhood on Saturday afternoon to find a "Metro Bus had crashed into a building along with a red sedan."

A female pedestrian who was standing outside the building was killed when the bus left the street after being hit by the other vehicle, SPD said.

The driver of the red Saturn sedan — an unnamed 31-year-old male — was transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition after being removed from the vehicle by the Seattle Fire Department (SFD), per SPD and NBC affiliate KING-TV.

The bus driver and 10 passengers "sustained minor non-life-threatening injuries," SPD shared. Eight people were taken to the medical center, SFD said, per KING-TV.

The accident occurred when the Saturn driver, who was heading southbound on 5th Avenue, hit the bus, which was heading eastbound on Battery Street, SPD said. They added that the collision then caused the bus to crash "into a building near the intersection."

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), SFD said that it searched the building and found no one inside the area hit by the bus. It added that the building was deemed to be structurally safe.

According to Gulpan, a SPD Drug Recognition Expert officer is evaluating the Saturn driver "for any signs of impairment." In the release, they added that Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives are investigating the accident.

The King County Metro, meanwhile, issued a statement regarding the “heartbreaking” accident, per KING-TV. "This tragic incident involving a vehicle and one of our buses is heartbreaking," King County Metro said. "Our primary concern is with the loss of life and the health of those who were injured."
