The Australian pop star appeared on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge on Tuesday

After releasing two disco-pop bangers, Troye Sivan is stripping things down.

The Australian artist, 28, stopped by BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge on Tuesday where he played his single “Rush,” as well as a cover of Billie Eilish’s Barbie soundtrack contribution “What Was I Made For?”

Joined by a keyboard player and a guitarist, the pop star gave a minimalist performance that highlighted the somber quality of the song from Eilish, 21, and her brother/collaborator Finneas O’Connell. Singing slowly and gently, the cover feels resonant of some of the ballads off Sivan’s 2015 debut album Blue Neighbourhood.

The “Bloom” singer, who was dressed in a sweater with peek-a-boo cutouts, also gave a low-key rendition of his hit “Rush.” He turned the dance floor anthem into a sultry slow jam with bossa nova-inspired instrumentation.

A handful of other artists have covered the “Bad Guy” singer during their Live Lounge sessions. Aside from Sivan, Shawn Mendes and Rina Sawayama both playedHappier Than Ever,” and Miley Cyrus sang “My Future.”

Sivan’s pick is the latest song from the pop star and Finneas, 26, and their original contribution to Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster Barbie movie.

The Grammy winner explained to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe upon the song’s release how it came out of a period of feeling exhausted creatively.

"We were really in a zone of feeling like we lost it and feeling like, 'Man, I don't know if we can do this anymore.' And we were like, I was 15 years old, 16, 17, and he's a teenager, you can imagine my thoughts of doubt. Like, 'Oh, I can't do this anymore,’” Eilish told Lowe.

After screening the film, Eilish explained she was “purely inspired” by it and ended up writing an emotional song that she deeply connected with. "I really don't mean this to come off a conceited way at all, but I do this thing where I make stuff that I don't even know is ... like I'm writing for myself and I don't even know it," she shared. "It is one of the most incredible things I get to experience in my life. Dude, the next week I was playing it in the car all day and playing it for everybody. And I was like, 'This is exactly how I feel. And I didn't even mean to be saying it.'"

He dropped “Rush” back in July when he announced the upcoming release, and recently shared a remix of the track featuring rising pop star PinkPantheress and Hyunjin of Stray Kids.

He also dropped “Got Me Started,” along with its stylish dance music video, in September.
