There are singers. There are songwriters. And then there's Carole King.

One of American music's true luminaries, the New York City native fulfills and transcends both sides of the singer-songwriter dash.

A Columbia institution unto itself, Cafe Berlin will give King just a few of the flowers she deserves at an upcoming tribute to her landmark 1971 album "Tapestry."

Here's a quick refresher on the record's greatness and what to expect from the event.

Carole King's second solo disc, "Tapestry," one of the world's best-selling records, spun off her time working as a Brill Building songwriter.

'Tapestry,' by the numbers:

4: Grammys "Tapestry" earned (album of the year, record of the year, song of the year, and best pop vocal performance, female)

12: Songs, with an even six per side

15: Number of weeks "Tapestry" spent atop the Billboard charts

313: Number of weeks "Tapestry" spent on the Billboard charts

14 million: Albums sold in the United States alone

More than 14 million: Moving moments on the album

What to expect from the 'Tapestry' tribute March 16

Cafe Berlin's event will feature two distinct and promising parts.

At 7 p.m. March 16, musician Margaret Waddell will lead a group playing King for kids. Specifically, they'll play King's settings of Maurice Sendak texts, which formed the "Really Rosie" musical on stage and screen.

Then at 8, a deep and wide group of artists will tackle "Tapestry" — from "I Feel the Earth Move" to "It's Too Late," "You've Got a Friend" to "Where You Lead" and everything before, between and beyond.

Our own local luminaries such as Meredith Shaw and Audra Sergel will perform, as well as many other artists and representatives of bands like Violet and the Undercurrents.

These covers "will have you dancing, tearing up, and celebrating the feminist ballads that have carried generations of women," an event description promises.

The "Tapestry" celebration takes place March 16; tickets are $8-$10. Find the event on Cafe Berlin's Facebook page.
